Hello Barrie Yes! The placement of the damper on the string IS very important. One only has to play a 'cello to discover the number of nodal points on the string (for getting harmonics) and to realise that in order to dampen not only the fundamental but also its harmonics the placement of the damper is very critical indeed. The Pohlman square's damping is quite good, by the way, and is hand-lever operated - splitting the damper rail in two lengths, treble and bass. Regards Michael G (UK)
