All strings and plate are in another room. A well
crowned soundboard will ring like a tympani with not a string in sight. Also
you can listen to the tuning of the board alone by whacking it in various
places with the heel of your hand. Near the bass bridge the ring is lower
pitched and near the treble bridge the ringing is higher pitched. A crowned
board will ring a second or two. An uncrowned board will go thunk like
hitting your dining table with a fist.">>>>

Well Having done this a good deal ,a nicely crowned board will also go
thunk ,unless at least its rear leg is lifted off the ground otherwise the boom
is dampened by the energy flowing down the legs and into the concrete. Also
I've heard many fairly flat to flat boards produce fairly good boom tests. So
what. Yes there is a very vibrant sound that comes from a freshly installed board
with nice fat crown. A 2 second ring is tops but its what it sound like
strung that counts.
