Hi Phillip:

That's a really odd thread.  I can see why it's so expensive.  I'm not even
sure how your machinist plans to make it since a 1/4-27 UNS tap would be
very hard to find.  Are you sure it's not 1/4-28?  This is a standard UNF
thread and you might be able to find a nut like this from McMaster-Carr or
even a hardware store.  If the nut isn't very thick, you might even be able
to get away with a 1/4-28 nut on a 1/4-27 stud without much interference.
