Yes, there are many "types", or rather, species of maple. But from a wood technology standpoint there are really only two types of maple - hard and soft. What is sold commercially in North America as "hard" or "rock" maple is sugar maple (Acer Saccharum) - the tree used for maple syrup production - black maple is also a hard maple. Soft maples are your red maples (Acer Rubrum) and silver maples (Acer Saccharinum).
