es, there are many "types", or rather, species of maple. But from a wood
technology standpoint there are really only two types of maple - hard and
soft. What is sold commercially in North America as "hard" or "rock" maple
is sugar maple (Acer Saccharum) - the tree used for maple syrup production -
black maple is also a hard maple. Soft maples are your red maples (Acer
Rubrum) and silver maples (Acer Saccharinum).

The softer variety is what the Ronsen Hammer uses. Its roughly the
equilevent weight as the sapele moldings & sometimes lighter but you know how wood is
,it can change weight when you least expect it within the same species.
