Yes, these pianos had a welded and/or bolted together tubular steel plate
structure.

These pianos were (are?) classic examples of a collection of brilliant ideas
that were poorly executed and with little thought given to fundamental piano
design principles. Too bad.

A side note: If memory serves, back in the '60s these pianos were, for a
very brief time, offered by the old Heathkit company as ready to assemble
kits under the Thomas name. Now that must have been an interesting assembly
manual.
