Okay, I need help with a real mystery ...

Old upright; Newly restrung; new bass bridge cap.

D2 has a loud buzzing string; sound is clearly coming from near the top
of the string.

There is NO mechanical interference with this string from the damper or
anything else.

String buzzes whether plucked or hammer-struck.

The companion string does NOT buzz even when tuned accurately in the
unison so it's not apparently something vibrating harmonically.

I have tightened the pressure bar (yes the bass has one in this piano)
AND --- ta, daaaaa! I ordered a replacement sting and installed it, so
it isn't a string-winding problem either!

I also moved the string slightly on the nickel-steel V-bar insert to
make sure there wasn't a bad spot.

As the man said upon hearing weird sounds coming from his hen house: "I
suspect poultrygeists!"
