PitchLock couplers

The big question is, why couple only two of a trichord?  In the Journal
article, it says "to preserve the original tone quality" (picture caption).
So, what happens to the tone?  And why not use them on bichords?  (And
they're "designed for the right pair" of a trichord?  Even curiouser!).
