Brighten old strings

When you say brighten, do you mean looks or tone?
They can be brightened somewhat by loosening, removing from the bottom, and
winding a loop around a dowel, or something, and moving the loop up and
down. When you put it back on, put a twist in, in the direction, that will
tighten the winding.
Some people remove them, and beat them on the floor, then replace them with
the twist.
As to longevity, of this, I don't know. I now suggest new strings,
