Normally the mark is to be put toward the hammer end of the shank.  Sometimes 
a roughened old finger (mine) has trouble feeling the difference.  IMHO it 
does make a difference in jack fine regulation if they are smooth on the return 
of the jack, but Roger makes a good point in that the consistency is vital. I 
usually feel each one to determine if the mark is correct. Make sure your 
finger has been washed (to remove oil and dirt) and very dry.  This seems to help.
