Yamaha Hammer question

I tuned a G1 yesterday, and if I didn't know better, it had Abels on 
it(green inner felt..warmer that any G1 I've ever encountered). The 
owner says he bought the piano new in 1991 here in the States..serial 
number confirms this.

I know I wasn't seeing things(green inner felt) or hearing things(warm 
sound).

Did Yamaha experiment with Abels at one time in the factory? I have 
serious doubts that a dealership would do this as part of SOP.
