diagonal pliers do this job nicely.asian made shanks have knuckles press fit,often no glue..this causes very confusing clicks,they sound like loose center pin or loose hammer head when the glue joint is loose..those knkls come out easy. good luck!

toe nail clipper...really big, actually I think they're cut nails?   You open the jaws up and squeeze them around the knuckle at the bass.  Squeeze and they "usually" pop right out...
