This is a multipart message in MIME format ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Oooo....that's sounds like a great title for a convention= class..."taming the wild beats" David I. Original message From: Alan To: 'Pianotech' Received: Fri, 15 Apr 2005 19:02:37 -0500 Subject: RE: Loose Bridge Pins and False Strings The real world .... Tuned a little console today, not bad for a Wurly and really= pretty clean in the treble, except for one absurdly wild string.= Ran the old "beat eliminator" down to the bridge and the beat,= mostly, went away. Also tuned and older Hamilton studio. Treble just grossly= obnoxious. Took a peek at the bridge. It looks like most of the= pins have risen about halfway out of their holes, standing about= 1/8" to 1/4" higher than the bridge top! There was no one there= (rural church) to authorize any repairs and I was out of time= anyway, but I'd like to lay that puppy down and epoxy in some= slightly longer and/or thicker pins just to see if the results= are worth the trouble. By the way, I once removed a thundering herd of wild beats from a= little Francis Bacon (gblerk, pfff) grand this way. If anyone= wants the beats I took out, I can ship immediately. But right= now I'm filling out a legal form, donating my nostrils to= science. Alan R. Barnard Salem, MO -----Original Message----- From: pianotech-bounces@ptg.org= [mailto:pianotech-bounces@ptg.org] On Behalf Of Michael Gamble Sent: Friday, April 15, 2005 11:49 AM To: Ron Nossaman Cc: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: Loose Bridge Pins and False Strings Hello Ron N and Listers I sent this yesterday: Hello Ron (and List) Your statement about false beats is a "must read" for all= interested in tuning pianos. I concur with all you have said. It all makes= profound sense. I now eagerly await a "trial by fire". I have therefore put your= obiter dictum on the List for all to read. Now.... Today I have had the opportunity to test your statement about= loose bridge pins =3D false strings. I took a screw driver to a= false string in the D5 zone where there was a particularly= obnoctious falseness (piano: baby grand Hopkinson) and... it= worked! The beat disappeared as I touched the pin on the= speaking/string side. Remove screw driver and the falseness= reappears. OK. The owner knows the bridge is split at several= pins (not where I was experiencing that Nossaman Phenomenon= though) and he accepts the high cost factor of replacing the= capping. So, I rest your case. Regards Michael G.(UK) -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
