Hello Avery I agree. I don't know either. Maybe the more nodal points which are covered, the greater the damping effect. This makes a bit of nonsense about shortening the felts then. But wait!... Maybe the requirement was for a certain amount of the partials to BE heard, to give a certain quality to that piano. Just ruminating!
