Jurgen, Thanks for the info. It's just as I suspected. I am not using modern steel on it. I am using the original strings, which are still holding. We put them back after repairing the soundboard etc. However, I am not sure what kind of new steel would be appropriate. Stephane Collin, who is also a contributor to this list, made some breaking tests with strings from an ~1860 Pleyel and later Bechstein, and found that they were similar in breaking to modern steel, while new "historical" type wire would break far sooner. But he can better explain his findings then me.
