I consider players to be the epitome of the mechanical marvel - a

Yes, indeed consider that the player was the original mechanical version of 
the programmable computer; it had an operating system and software.
My Gulbransen (1926) is still going in it's original form except for the 
regulator bellows which has multiple layers of latex daubed over it.
