If you mean on a string replacement you can avoid the "cranking" up and excessive slack associated with it by prewinding the string on a dummy pin and then transferring the coil. That will keep enough tension on the string to keep it locked on the bridge pins. When restringing, you should be able to coil the string onto the new pin enough so that you maintain tension on the string which will keep it in place at the bridge.
