Upright hammer shanks

If they are the old cedar shanks they might very well be nearing the usefulness...Bill Spurlock has a good system for upright hammer installation...in fact I have the stuff if you want to use it....of course I'd have to find it.   Pre-hang the hammers on the shanks, I believe...
