I don't use hide glue at all, but not for fear of my health. I just think it's messy, smelly, and time consuming. There are decent substitutes for every task, IMO. Now if I were in the rebuilding business, doing keyset after keyset, for example, and was working on something better than the Crappe de Jour I mostly see, then maybe I'd keep a glue pot going. Here's a time-saving tip: Put hot dogs in your glue pot to simmer; by lunchtime they're nice and hot. This does not work with tofu, I'm told, because the glue rejects the tofu and spits it out.
