Hi Marshall,

The "low wave" you sometimes hear may be a "resultant tone". Here is a
simple example.

If you play two notes, one with frequence of 300 hertz and the other with a
frequency of 400 hertz there will be a "resultant tone" (or "difference
note") at 100 hertz (400-300 = 100)

So far as I am aware no one has developed a method of tuning using
resultant tones as a diagonostic tool.
