Speaking of the wa wa wa. When I was workig on unisons on my wife's Kimabll, notice I say my wife's Kimball. ;) I could hear the string wa was wa in the beating of the intervals. As I heard them, I could hear what sounded like a second set of slower beats. What do you guys make of that occurance?

  Hello MIchelle,

Sounds like you nailed this one very well. Congratulations!

You will learn, with time, to tune WITH the fans on - during the summer. If you are anything like me - 80% of the homes I do service work in, IMHO, are HOT! You can learn to ignore the fan wah, wah, wah and only hear the string wah, wah, wah.

I have one regular customer with two grand pianos in her 130 year old living room. No air conditioning there either. She did put in 'lectricity and indoor plumbing back in the '40s. I see her in November and again in March for tuning. January or February for any serious work.

Her pianos are remarkably stable. No humidity control what-so-ever. Simply amazing.

Hi all. I wanted to tell you about my very first tuning for pay. It was for a music teacher friend who lives in an old farmhouse here in Central Texas. She said I might want to come early in the day because she has no air conditioning! So I get there about 9:00 and it's pretty pleasant. She has the windows open and the fans running. I learned very quickly that the fans were going to have to be turned off (wah, wah, wah.). By the time I finished it was nice and toasty. (Read sweating like a pig.) =)

Of course, you're probably wondering what kind of shape this poor Baldwin Console was in with our Texas weather. Would you believe that the bass was a little flat, the treble quite a bit sharp, and the center was almost dead on?! It hasn't been tuned in years.

Anyways, just thought you might like to hear about the adventures of a newbie tuner.
