According to John Travis, "A Guide to Restringing", a Steinway Square Grand uses a unison of #23 wire.
A Kranich and Bach, Ser No 57389, has 4 unisons of #24.

Basically, no where on a piano. At least that I know of. But that chart had several
  sizes even larger than that!

      Michelle,

Dave beat me to it but here's a chart you might like to keep handy.

I have one similar hanging on a wall in my shop. I can also send it

to in Excel if you can open that.

That would be correct. Wire that thick can have a mind of it's own!

Iâ?Tm new at this game Avery so please tell me if Iâ?Tm wrong. I just measured the scrap string I took off the piano at .041. Am I correct that this would be a size 18?

        Itâ?Ts a giant old piano.

        Thanks!

Wow. That seems awfully big for middle C. You sure it wasn't a lower note?
