Tom, I think you're spinning this the wrong way. I think it is very
worth while to join the PTG for the chance to associate with others
in your trade who may know more than you, or may not, then you can
help them, the regional and national seminars are always a ;earning
experience no matter how much you know, the journal and this list are
invaluable resources. Why not take pride in being a contributing part
of a professional organization? I have never felt that status enters
into it, or should enter into it. No doubt there are some out there
who wear RPT like a badge and look down from some self defined lofty
height on the lower classes but thats a very small minority, maybe Im
just lucky that I have never met one. Since I joined in 1988 I have
encountered only friendly, supportive people, some of whom are among
my close friends to this day. After all, my wife just rolls her eyes
at me when I start talking temperaments, we need someone to hang out
with who will understand our obsessions. And by the way, I do have a
life outside of work, mostly occupied by kids, true but also
including music and fishing and neighborhood activism, very important
in New Orleans these days.
