Hi, Try a split mute as I suggested. Taper the end to 1/4" at the tip on a belt sander and if it is too thick , use the belt sander to thin the sides ( the wide part is sometimes too thick and blocks the hammers.
Also lift the dampers with the pedal as you insert the mute. You only need to do this on the highest dampers.

    HI Everyone,
I was going through some old posts about using rubber mutes in the trebble. Does anyone here know if the rubber mutes sold by Schaff and Pianotech are the same or do they differ in some way?

I'm finding as a new piano tuner that my speed is being eaten up by trying to mute the trebble. I've tried numerous great suggestions, but don't seem to have the knack to get the mute thing down. Especially on spinits and my wife's Kimball, it's hard to het your hand in there to mute it off ie. the top of the right hand gets jammed against the tuning pins trying to fit the mute it. Also, I find that the ends of the mutes don't want to grap-seem real thin. Other than this my speed and tuning acuracy seem to be improving. Any ideas on the muting?

I'm not sure if I did, but I hope everyone knows that I appreciate and value yoru expert advice and ideas as I learn this new exciting trade. Thanks so much again.

Subject: what glue for hammer felts?

i've got a few hammers off a baldwin spinet with the felt coming loose. any suggestions as to what glue i should use? i've considered using PVC-E to reglue the felt because it's supposed to be good for dissimilar surfaces, but i'm not sure.
