I have also seen Steinways where the case was built-up on the outside to make it squarish (like in the Bosendorfer 290 concert grand). I think these were special-order pianos. The plate should be the normal shape though. I've simply never seen one quite like this - it appears to have oak veneers - the owner claims it is solid oak, but we've all heard that before.
