Question About Setting Octaves in the High Treble

I try to match everything the best I can. If i'm up in the hight end of the 
piano, then I'll test it with notes way down into the tenor section.  Is 
that an OK practice. If i'm doing f 8 and test it with f 3 f4 f5 etc to get 
a good fit, is that reasonable?
