I also reassure the customer that if a string breaks, it's just replaced. 
Anything breaking noisily on a piano is scary.  The tire analogy is helpful: 
sometimes you get a flat while driving, sometimes while parked.  You just 
repair or replace, as necessary.  If you splice a bass string, you really 
look like a hero.
