I like the Blind wedge suggestion very much as well as the pegged tenon,
but if all else fails you might consider pocket screws.

Lowes and Homer's have nice kits by Kreg (I think) that have the jig,
bit, screw assortments, and special plugs for covering the screw. Decent
price.

Pocket screw joints are very strong.
