That's a good point Steve. Its a compelling reason, when designing a 
grand piano, for locating the hammer center pin and close to the 
string plane as practical, given that it needs to clear the pin block.

I haven't looked at this matter with respect to the upright yet. I'll 
be drawing a side elevation over the next couple of weeks. Will look 
at a few options to see what seems to be an approach. My experience 
with upright piano action geometry is quite limited as yet.
