Golf balls are made of a long, thin continuous thread of rubber that is wound up very tightly, so it's under tremendous tension. It was probably the sudden release of that tension that did him in ... not an "explosion" per say.
This has been an official wild guess.

    Was the thing packed with explosive?....or am I ignorant about golf balls' composition....they do explode when aged??????
