Formulae for String Calculations

Hi John

Thanks muchly for taking the time to put together the webpage on your
site. One of the questions I have, and have had for quite a while
pertains to bass strings. You mention taking into account the unwound
end lengths of wound strings. The article in the Calculating Technician
mentions this and the length of single winding end lengths on double
wound strings as well... along with two formulas to deal with it. And
there is the matter of hex core vs round.

Yet... on the few spreadsheets I've seen so far... it seems like bass
inharmonicity is dealt with far more simply. Overs posted a spreadsheet
a couple months back that calculates B for the wrap by dividing the
diameter of the cover squared by the diameter of the core squared and
mulitiplying by 0.89 (for copper). This is then used directly to
calculate inharmonicity (and Z for that matter)

My question is, whether or not spreadsheets and string calculation
programs generally take into account these end lengths for basic scaling
work ? How important is it to gain the extra accuracy in taking into
account these endlenghts, hex/round... etc factors ?

Cheers
RicB
