removing shanks from butts

This procedure has been posted before.

Cut the shank flush with the butt.
Drill a hole into the shank for a #8 sheet rock screw. The hole should
be sized to secure the screw but not cause binding with screw inserted.

Apply water to the hole, heat the screw and insert. Remove screw/shank
with shank puller. The steam generated should soften the glue for removal.

I like to use a square drive screw because it secures to the screw driver tip
which makes it easy to hold in a torch flame and install.

Wouldn't be easier to replace the butts?
