How much tone is lost by PAINTING a soundboard with gray primer ????( YUCK! !!)

If the grey paint is indeed primer, it should be 
shellac based as I think most primer is. If 
that's the case perhaps alcohol will loosen it 
enough to scrub it off with a scotch brite pad or something.
