Trying to be conscious

Well, I must point out, in the spirit of "typo gotcha", that David didn't say he was trying to be conscientious, he's only trying to be conscious--to which I say, go ahead and take that needed nap.

When I salvage a piano, I remove all good screws unless it's a newish piano with the typical Chinese pot-metal crap you find at the stores these days, but I digress. Then I have a glorious bonfire, smash the plate, drop it off at a metals place and toss the strings in the trash. And I do all of that very conscientiously.

 Recycling yards are not dumps where you drop off whole items with lots of different metals. They want things that they can recycle, without having to do any work. 

If you want to be conscientious, you will need to take the piano apart. The plate and the copper wound string might be worth salvaging, but I doubt if they will take the plain strings, screws, and wood. 

But you might want to keep all the screws, pedals, hinges, etc for your own use later on. Big wood panels can be made into table tops. If the legs are fancy, you can lamps out of them. The case can be converted into a desk or stereo cabinet. I once saw the shell of an upright converted into small terrarium with a fish tank.
