Regluing hammer felts continued

That happens all the time. If they are popping off on both sides, just take the entire hammer felt piece off - it's easier to get the glue in there anyway when they are off.

Just pop them off, accelerator on the core, CA on the felt, put in place on core, one hand with fingers on the hammer felt tip and thumb on the rear core pressing the tip into the core, and the other hand with fingers clamping felt on top and bottom. Hold for a few seconds until CA sets and go to next one. I've probably done a dozen or so pianos like that - works perfect every time. Piano sounds just as crappy as it did before hammer felt fell off!

I don't remember if you stated what kind of piano this is, and I certainly realize that it is better to replace than glue hammers, but if this is a $500 piano and the owners are not going to upgrade (that's really the solution!), then just glue the darn things - it really is fairly easy and I have always had complete success.

You state that the felt got too stiff after applying CA. Are you using thin CA? No good. Use extra thick CA - nothing gets any stiffer than it was before being glued.

As some of you might suspect, my hammer regluing job was a bust. Called the customer and told them that it does need new hammers. When I would CA glue the separated side of the hammer, the other side would come loose in my hands and with the glue on one side, they became too stiff to work with with any good results.

Now my question: Are there any pliers to split the heads off the shanks that are better than others. I have done many grand sets, but you know there is a difference. I have only done one vertical set retaining the old shanks at the Piano Hospital, where they had a dandy tool for that purpose. If there is more than one kind of pliers, what are the opinions of which one works best.

Yes I have egg on my face, but as grumpy Joe can tell you, I will work until I get it right. I was once told that if the only ones that could play piano were those that could afford Steinways: the world would have missed out on many good musicians. I would stoop to regluing hammers if I could help some one, but when it is not possible, then I am willing to take the high ground and replace the entire set.
