OT: Regarding Vista

Hi,

..coming in late on this thread:

Based on testing being done locally and in other departments at Stanford,
I'd suggest that, unless you really have money to throw at some pretty
fancy new hardware, waiting on Vista is going to be the safer bet. We have
assurances from Dell (hmmm...rather like guarantees from some well-known
piano makers) that WinXP will be available on their new machines through
2007. Based on other information from other institutions that are well
into testing, the common wisdom (at the present time) is to wait until MS
decides how stable they will make the first release. Historically, this is
usually with Service Pack one/whatever.

Our tack here, 200 +/- users, is to stay with WinXP Pro while the dust
settles; and buy as few new machines as possible until it becomes clear
what really does and does not work. The reason for this is based partly on
the fact that MS changed the driver setups so often during the beta cycle
that it is not at all clear what actually does and does not work.

That said, if you are feeling adventerous, Vista looks pretty promising.

Best regards.

Horace
