The sole purpose of the butt spring or spring-rail spring is to 
counterbalance the tendency of the forward-weighted hammer to fall 
against the strings and burble as the jack (whose spring can also be 
set too strong) pushes its way back under the notch.  Any tension 
greater than what is required for this function will not only impair 
repetition but also increase the touch weight.
