Ed,

I sent a reply to Roger's comments which add some more details. I'll look at
your suggestion, but I feel that the issue is the stretcher since I was able
to slide the action cleanly and easily forward until the screws impacted the
stretch board.

I'm certainly not ruling out any possibility until I visit the piano again.

       Is it possible that the plate screws through the webbing have
loosened 
with age and allowed the pinblock to flex downward in response to string 
tension levering it through the pins?
