Ed, I sent a reply to Roger's comments which add some more details. I'll look at your suggestion, but I feel that the issue is the stretcher since I was able to slide the action cleanly and easily forward until the screws impacted the stretch board. I'm certainly not ruling out any possibility until I visit the piano again. Thanks for you help.
