Anthony Shead in his book The Anatomy Of The Piano, calls the creaking sound/sensation of unpolished capstans against wippen felt "scrooping" which is almost onomatopoeic. Even on older mediocre uprights (with which my "patch" is awash), it can make a most satisfying difference to attend to capstan surfaces, I find. (In addition to a quick take-up of Lost Motion).
