Hi Annie,

I have traveled many times with tools and have never had a problem.  Its my
practice to put my tool bag in a suitcase that I check.  I have only had one
instance where that bag was searched.  They put a note in to let you know
(as if you could not tell)...  For the times where I have just checked my
kit out side of a suitcase they always have searched it.  That is the reason
that I put the kit in a peace of luggage.  Its not that I mind them going
through it, they just don't put things back from where they came from...
Tell your friend good luck from us all, and to not stress about the tools!
Stressing about the exams is bad enough!
