Meanwhile, I just got done cutting and chiseling off the back edge of the stretcher, where it overhung the plate. It's one of those cute things that can be done when the outer rim is added after the inner is strung. They obviously weren't concerned about future rebuilding. In any case, the overhang is gone, and I can now pull the plate. The piano will be refinished Ebony, so that black walnut spreader will look just fine with a cover strip added later. Been a long time since I cut walnut. I'd forgotten how toxic the stuff is. Yuck! Ron N
