That is the part of the case in front of the pin block and plate,
removable on some Ferengi pianos, that stretches from one
side to the other. Actually it's probably fit fairly well and not put
under any tension, otherwise it would have a tendency to pull
the sides inwards.

Not much call for plank stretchers these days. Even after cutting
it twice and still being too short, it's only short on one end; hence
the birth of the center medallion.
