Most of us have a primary tool case, which goes everywhere with us, and a number of secondary kits, which vary in scope and content, because as you say, we all have our own preferences. I'm sure the “old hands” have very good advice on this. The PTG book A Piano Technician's Guide to Field Repairs, has a fairly comprehensive list of standard tools and supplies. I've found it an invaluable resource. In this vein, I prefer to think that knowledge is the most important tool I bring to a service call. Every so often, in the privacy and quiet of my own shop, I like to review ”standard” techniques I haven't used in a while. Knot tying, shaping hammers with a Dremel (as per another thread), whatever. I'm sure a lot of us relatively new kids have asked the rebuilder types for some throwaway action parts to practice on. Just a thought.
