It really isn't too bad if you do it like Greg says, one step at a time. When you try to do too much at once you get into trouble and it takes a lot more energy. A big problem is getting the piano started on the steps. You have to lift the top end of the skid for several steps until the entire skid finally makes onto the steps. An easy fix for this is to upend the piano onto its side and bring it to the stairwell this way. When you get to the bottom step just lower the top of the skid onto the steps and there you are. Conversely, when going down the stairs, when you get to the bottom, just lift the top end of the skid on up to upend the piano on its side. The man on the bottom can position the dolly as it is being raised. Wheel it away and then lower the piano to horizontal when you get room. We use a normal grand board and push/pull up one stair at a time, set, then the next up till the next floor. I differ with you and think that it might even be easier for a shorter fellow when he's the one on the bottom. Since I always place myself there (not wanting to put employees in possible harm's way if I wasn't willing to do it myself) I've found that there are a number of situations where I wish I could be even more compressed (lower) than this aging and overweight body will currently allow. I'm currently 6'0" and shrinking and about 225lbs. I'm no weakling and my helper (my son) works out every day, so we're not short of manpower as far as two men go... so is the a clever procedure or special rigging? I shy away from those thinking they could be too dangerous. Player uprights come out of basements with only 2 guys. Tall uprights to any floor you choose. Concert grands a maximum of 5 stairs before we bring in another helper. The CYA advise is good though.
