[pianotech] Little Cloth "Mutes"

My best guess would be that the front duplex was screaming on those notes so someone “muted” them.  It’s a fairly common fix.

Hello List.  One of the grands I tune, for a local high school, is a Steinway D with the pieces of flange pin cloth laced between the three strings of E6 and F6, between the capo and the pressure bar.
Will somebody explain what these items are the their function.
