I have spent most of the last 40 years as an aural tuner. Last September I finally entered the 20th century(g) and bought a cybertuner 2 weeks ago I was an hour into a 25c pitch raise on a new George Steck Grand when my battery went down. I switched to my backup battery and the device insisted that it was also discharged even though I had charged it all night. So I shut it off, put it away and finished the tuning aurally. Do I regret learning to tune aurally? Occasionally when I can't enjoy a recording or concert as much as my wife is because the piano is so badly out of tune. However I have learned such self-control and concentration that I can tune with a migraine and while I'm tuning be pain free, control the cough reflex when I choke. This from being alone on the road so much, frequently grabbing a sandwich between tunings, if I choked I had to "fix it" myself, I was alone in my truck. I once totally confused a physician when I told her I had felt faint, so I locked my arms through a ladder and as I watched the back of my house start to spin then come back to center then start to spin and come back to center again. She finally realized that I had been controlling it, I was alone in an open garage on a freezing day with 40mph winds blowing and knew if I fainted I would probably freeze to death. These are all instances of self-control I have developed through my almost 40 years of tuning and the control and concentration acquired in that time. So yes I may have some minor regrets but if I had it to do again, I wouldn't hesitate! Mike -- I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
