Cy, actually the longer the hammer stays on the string the more high partials it kills.  I don't want it to get off the string before it has constrained some really screechy sounds.

One voicing consideration I expected to hear with respect to sustain  
is needling the shoulders to get the hammer off the string sooner.   
The longer the hammer contacts the string, the more it will damp the  
vibration already imparted, like a drumstick held against a drumhead.
