  Simply fascinating what Mr Jonas & company could  come up with.  I don't 
think they got much sleep. Bunch a obsessive  compulsives.

Below, and attached, is a picture of a  whippen from a Chickering Bros (ugh) 
grand. It's the kind with a soft pedal  mechanism that raises the hammer rest 
rail closer to the strings to reduce  blow distance.

Familiar to anyone?
