Hello Paul, This is indeed a " Lost Motion Eliminator " This device allows a "soft " pedal to raise the hammers closer to the strings without creating any lost motion between the keys to the hammer. This small lever was activated by a control rod at the back connected to a pedal and could be individually regulated Melville Clark first used this system in his " Apollo " player Grands. The connection between the Chickering Bros. " Acoustigrande" and the " A. B. Chase " could have been the Thayer Action Co. They are the Co. that built this particular whippen. Hope this helps, Jack Wyatt **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music.
