Wow...man, I'm having a hard time getting my head around this paranoia..
Now if I was a recovering child molester...I could understand it..

I've been interested in this thread, because, while not a "dirty old man" like most of you'all, I AM a "matronly, Grandma-type". I wouldn't tolerate having a young child left in the home alone with me.

I go to a person's home to give careful attention to the tuning, tone and touch of their piano so it can bring joy and beauty into their household. I do not go to baby-sit, even though I have been known--quite frequently--to spend extra hours, showing things on the piano to interested kids. But I cannot monitor a toddler's activities and give proper attention to the piano at the same time.

Other reasons I would not tolerate being left alone with a young child include, but are probably not limited to: a young child is not responsible enough to take care of him/herself. All Kinds of things could go wrong.

Am I qualified to take them to the proper emergency room? Do I know their house well enough to know where emergency supplies are kept? Am I a first aid expert? Do I know that a child is in the home in case of an external emergency--tornado, fire, etc.? Am I supposed to endanger my own life, searching their home to make sure everyone is out?

My tools are sharp and dangerous, my supplies deadly. If no one told me that there would be a toddler alone in the house with me........

I could go on and on, but you get the drift. If I arrived at a home and found a toddler alone there, I would make every attempt possible to find one or both parents, or a baby sitter, or a knowledgible neighbor, and lacking success with any of the above, I would call the police.
